The Teaching Professor: 8th Annual Conference

The Teaching Professor will be holding a three day conference in Atlanta, Georgia from May 20 – 22.  Faculty from across the country will gather to explore the newest ideas in teaching and learning, hear the latest research, and discuss the state of today’s changing classroom.

Over 800 faculty attended last year’s conference in Cambridge.  The 2011 Conference will also feature a cross-disciplinary flavor and attendees will be able to choose from over 50 workshops and luncheon sessions.  Past conferences included such positive feedback: “This was one of the best organized, [most] informative conferences I have ever attended.  Each session, each activity was rich in content and well worth the time.”  Check out The Teaching Professor’s brochure to view more testimonials and event description including pricing.

CFP: 8th Annual ISSOTL Conference (due March 15)

The International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learningis holding its eighth annual conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from October 20-23, 2011.  Please keep in mind that submissions will be accepted from January 10-March 15.

The conference will explore the future transformation of higher education, as it relates to those in attendance: international scholars, researchers, and educators .  Along with workshops, speakers, panel presentations, and roundtable discussions, ISSOTL’s signature “Conference Commons” for informal idea-sharing will be featured.

ISSOTL, founded in 2004, seeks to foster inquiry and disseminate findings about what improves and articulates post-secondary learning and teaching.  In ISSOTL’s past annual conferences, attendance ranged from 440 to 800 scholars.  This year, the Society will be accepting submissions that coalesce with the conference theme - “Transforming the Academy through the Theory & Practice of SOTL”. The following themes or topics are acceptable:

  • Impact of SOTL
  • The Practices of SOTL
  • The Theoretical Perspectives and Principles of SOTL
  • The Tensions between Theory and Practice in SOTL
  • Internationalization of SOTL Theory and Practice
  • Professional Development and SOTL

Summer Institute: Teaching Peace in the 21st Century

The Kroc Institute’s Summer Institute is designed for faculty who would like to create a peace studies program at their institution, strengthen a fledgling peace studies program, or take established peace studies courses and programs to the next level of design and rigor.

 

As a participant, you will:

  • Engage with leading thinkers regarding the contemporary parameters of peace studies as it relates to praxis, research, and teaching;
  • Explore the pedagogical, administrative, and public relations challenges of peace studies;
  • Collaborate with your team (at least 3 faculty/staff members from the same campus) on course development and programming while benefitting from ideas and expertise of others in the field.

Community-Based Learning Summer Institute

The Office of Community-Based Learning is pleased to announce its first CBL Summer Institute (held June 2 – 4, 2010).

The Institute will give faculty an opportunity to team up with a community partner and student leader, and work closely with OCBL staff to design a new CBL course or revamp an already existing CBL course.

The three days will include a tour of Brockton, team building exercises, some nuts and bolts presentations on CBL, and ample time to create projects/syllabi in team groups and then workshop ideas in larger groups.

SOTL Writing Retreat — due April 9

March 30, 2010

Thanks to the efforts of our new CTL Faculty Fellow, John Lanci, the CTL is sponsoring a three-day overnight retreat devoted to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) this May 25-27, 2010.

The retreat – which will be held at the Cedar Hills Retreat Center in Duxbury, MA – will be geared both to faculty developing new SOTL projects and those working on writing up their SOTL findings.

In addition to workshops on SOTL methods and project design, faculty will have opportunities to share their work with others and free time for writing. Meals and lodging are provided.

Pauline Dobrowski (Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students), Richard Grant (Associate Dean for Academic Achievement and Director of Academic Services), and Maria Kavanaugh (Staff Social Worker and Case Manager, Counseling and Testing Center) will be leading this workshop for faculty about interacting with students who exhibit concerning behaviors.

This program will explore different types of concerning or disruptive behaviors students may exhibit in the classroom, in assignments, or in communications with professors.

The presenters will review specific warning signs and “red flags.” Practical methods on how to approach these students or express concerns to others about student behaviors will be discussed. On-campus resources available to both faculty and students will be covered. Please feel free to bring your lunch with you to this workshop.
