Teaching Squares sign-up

August 30, 2010

The Teaching Squares program provides faculty an opportunity to reflect on their teaching within a supportive group of colleagues.

Each “square” consists of four faculty who agree to visit each other’s classes at least once over the course of a semester.  The group then meets at the end of the semester to discuss what they learned from the process.  Read more about Teaching Squares here.

By allowing faculty to be “learners” again in their colleagues’ classes, Teaching Squares can open up unique spaces for reflection and conversation about teaching.

If you would like to sign up for a Fall 2009 Teaching Square, please fill out the registration form found here.

Community-Based Learning Summer Institute

March 30, 2010

The Office of Community-Based Learning is pleased to announce its first CBL Summer Institute (held June 2 – 4, 2010).

The Institute will give faculty an opportunity to team up with a community partner and student leader, and work closely with OCBL staff to design a new CBL course or revamp an already existing CBL course.

The three days will include a tour of Brockton, team building exercises, some nuts and bolts presentations on CBL, and ample time to create projects/syllabi in team groups and then workshop ideas in larger groups.

Applications are due April 9, 2010.

To learn more and to access the online application form, visit the Office of CBL’s website.

2010 National CASTL Institute: “Creativity”

January 6, 2010

Every June, Creighton University hosts a Carnegie Foundation-sponsored institute for faculty working on scholarly projects related to teaching and learning.

Part of Carnegie’s CASTL Leadership Program, the institute consists of three days of SOTL workshops as well as opportunities to present work-in-progress for feedback.

The theme for this year’s institute is “Creativity,” though they also welcome proposals that address topics beyond the theme.  Read more about the institute and this year’s theme on the CASTL Institute website.

To apply to participate as a “scholar” in the institute (so that you can present your work-in-progress), submit a proposal describing your project by February 3, 2010.  Read about proposal guidelines here.

Thanks to Sue Mooney for passing along this post from the Tomorrow’s Professor blog on “How to Succeed in the Academy.”

  1. Know yourself
  2. Know what is expected of you and deliver it
  3. Further your institutional and departmental missions
  4. Never lie
  5. Respect everyone
  6. Pick your battles
  7. Own your own mistakes
